CAIR-NY Welcomes Mayor’s Support for Broadcast of Muslim Call to Prayer (Adhan) Citywide

(NEW YORK NY, 8/29/2023) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded the decision by Mayor Eric Adams to publicly support the Muslim call to prayer, the adhan (A-THAAN), to be freely heard throughout the city on Fridays and during Ramadan without a sound permit.

This support clarifies and removes obstacles previously experienced by some mosques despite the New York City administrative code allowing houses of worship to amplify sound for religious purposes.

In the past, there have been several instances in which the NYPD has harassed mosques for broadcasting the adhan, demanding repeated permits be filed with each use of amplified sound. Churches and synagogues, on the other hand, were not required to file a permit, and are explicitly named in the exception to the administrative code.

"This clarification by Mayor Eric Adams is vital in underscoring New York City's rich tradition of religious diversity and pluralism," said Afaf Nasher, executive director of CAIR-NY. "The sound of the adhan is not just a call to prayer; it is a call to unity, reflection, and community. We believe that this action will contribute to greater understanding and appreciation of the Muslim community's values and traditions."

CAIR-NY's mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR-NY es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
