(NEW YORK NY, 8/15/2023) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the indictment of the alleged perpetrator of a hate crime assault targeting an Asian-American couple in New York City’s Koreatown.

CAIR-NY also condemned racist messages targeting a mayor in that state.

A man has been indicted on two counts of Assault in the Third Degree as a Hate Crime and two counts of Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree for allegedly assaulting an Asian-American couple as they waited for an Uber on a sidewalk in Koreatown in May. The man reportedly made racist remarks to the couple before physically attacking them.

CAIR-NY's Executive Director Afaf Nasher said, “The continued rise in attacks targeting Asian-Americans is deeply disturbing. We welcome the indictment and hope it will serve as a deterrent to further attacks. We also hope that proactive measures can be taken to curb future attacks.”

Nasher also condemned threatening, racist messages targeting Saratoga Springs Mayor Ron Kim, reportedly left on his voicemail machine.

She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white supremacy, anti-Jewish hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.
