(NEW YORK, N.Y. 4/4/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an attack on a 75-year-old Sikh man who was reportedly punched in an unprovoked assault in Queens that police are investigating as a possible hate crime.

According to police, the alleged attacker did not say anything during the attack and fled the scene.

“We condemn this attack on a member of the Sikh community and urge law enforcement authorities to do everything they can to bring the alleged perpetrator to justice,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “Religious, racial and ethnic minorities are increasingly being targeted by hate, and members of those minority communities must be able to go about their daily business without fear of harassment or attack.”

She noted that last month, CAIR-NY welcomed the arrest of the man who police believe smashed the windows of a Queens, N.Y., church.

Afaf said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, white supremacy, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR-NY’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR-NY es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
