The following is a list of internship opportunities that are offered by CAIR-NY, but may not represent our current openings. Please visit our social media @cairnewyork for the most up to date information on internship opportunities.

Applications are accepted year-round for CAIR–NY’s Legal Services Internship program. Legal Services Interns will gain extensive experience in direct legal services, fact research, and writing.  Legal Services Interns will be trained on how to work with victims of discrimination, conducting client intakes and evaluating new cases under the supervision of CAIR–NY’s Director of Strategic Litigation.  Legal Services Interns will also learn how to research a broad array of legal topics connected to CAIR–NY's pending civil rights advocacy, including religious discrimination by law enforcement.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in (or recent graduation from) an undergraduate or graduate program.

  • Strong research and writing skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and phone skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and major research databases.

  • Documented interest in civil rights work and issues affecting civil rights and/or the American Muslim community.

  • Preference given to students who have taken relevant coursework and/or previously worked in a legal office setting.

  • All encouraged to apply, but a preference is given to students who can devote 10 hours a week (Fall/Spring Semesters) or 20 hours a week (Summer Semester).

Applications are accepted year-round for CAIR–NY’s Communications Internship program.  Communications Interns will gain substantial experience implementing print, broadcast, and social media strategies.  Communications Interns will also be trained on how to review media requests submitted by news outlets from around the world, learning how to prioritize CAIR–NY’s messaging and branding. Interns will learn how to draft media advisories and press releases and how to conduct press conferences.  Interns will also, when viable, accompany CAIR–NY staff to interviews, gaining the opportunity to meet, network with, and learn from journalists.  Furthermore, Communications Interns will learn how to respond to breaking news and also develop CAIR–NY’s long-term media plan.  Communications Interns will be expected to take ownership of sophisticated projects and to also develop novel initiatives to further CAIR–NY’s communication’s strategy, while working under the supervision of CAIR-NY’s Communications Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in (or recent graduation from) an undergraduate or graduate program.

  • Experience in communications, journalism, and/or public relations.

  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies, including social media campaigns.

  • Knowledge of database management preferred.

  • Aptitude for managing multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Superb writing and editing skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and phone skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and major social media platforms.

  • Experience with multimedia production, preferably including graphic design and/or video.

  • Documented interest in civil rights work and issues affecting the American Muslim community.

Applications are accepted year-round for CAIR–NY’s Outreach Internship program.  Outreach Interns will gain substantial experience establishing and maintaining relationships with the local community via schools, mosques, Muslim Student Associations, and other Muslim organizations.  Outreach Interns will also learn how to establish and maintain relationships with local coalition partners and (when appropriate) governmental institutions, such as New York City Council Members, liaisons to the Mayor’s Office, and other city, state, and federal agencies.  Outreach Interns will also work on goal driven projects involving civic engagement and other community-based education workshops.  Additionally, Outreach Interns will learn how to maintain a comprehensive database of local outreach activities and undertake other office duties as assigned.

Applications are accepted year-round for CAIR–NY’s Development Internship program.  Development Interns will gain substantial experience in nonprofit development and management.  Specifically, interns will learn about grant writing, researching donor prospects, solicitation strategy, in addition to gaining valuable office experience working in one of the region's leading civil rights organizations.  Additionally, interns will refine their writing skills by helping to write and copy edit reports on CAIR–NY’s ongoing work.

  • Current enrollment in (or recent graduation from) an undergraduate or graduate program.

  • Ability to work well under pressure

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Preference given to students who have taken relevant coursework and/or previously worked in development.

  • Prior grant-writing experience preferred.

  • All encouraged to apply, but a preference is given to students who can devote 10 hours a week (Fall/Spring Semesters) or 20 hours a week (Summer Semester).

Applications are accepted year-round for CAIR–NY’s Government Affairs Internship program. Government Affairs interns work on goal driven projects involving civic engagement, policy research, public advocacy, and community-based educational workshops. Government Affairs interns gain experience in researching and analyzing proposed legislation to determine its potential impact on American Muslims, attend meetings with allies and stakeholders, and help prepare internal and external communications. Government Affairs interns also have the opportunity to establish and maintain relationships with community members, coalition partners, and when appropriate, governmental institutions such as New York City Council Members, liaisons to offices of the Mayor, Governor, and New York State Legislators, as well as other city, state, and federal agencies.
