CAIR-NY Welcomes Arrest of Texas Man for Alleged Anti-Muslim Threats Against Zohran Mamdani

(NEW YORK, NY, 9/18/25) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of a Texas man charged with making anti-Muslim death threats against New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani .

Jeremy Fistel, 44, was arrested in Texas by the US Marshals Service and the NYPD’s Regional Fugitive Task Force for threatening phone calls made to Mamdani’s Queens office. Bloomberg reports: “He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Queens Criminal Court on charges including making a terroristic threat and aggravated harassment as a hate crime.”

In a statement, Afaf Nasher, Esq., CAIR-NY Executive Director, said:

“We welcome the arrest of the individual accused of threatening Assemblymember Mamdani and are grateful to law enforcement for taking these hate-fueled threats seriously. No public servant—or any individual—should be subjected to Islamophobic harassment or violence simply for serving their community or for being who they are. Hate has no place in our state or our nation.”

She noted that in June, CAIR-NY condemned the series of Islamophobic death threats targeting Mamdani.

Nasher encouraged the public to report incidents of bias, profiling, or harassment using CAIR-NY’s incident report form at www.cair-ny.org/report-incident
