CAIR, CAIR-NY Offer Condolences to Family of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, Others Killed in Mass Shooting
Muslim civil rights and advocacy organizations also condemn baseless anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian rhetoric in wake of shooting
(NEW YORK, NY, 7/29/25) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its New York chapter (CAIR-NY) today offered condolences to the loved ones of all those killed or injured in a shooting spree yesterday at a Manhattan skyscraper.
Those killed in the attack included NYPD Police Officer Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh.
In a statement, CAIR-New York Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
"We extend our condolences to the family of New York City Police Department officer Didarul Islam and the other victims of yesterday's mass shooting in Manhattan. Officer Islam was the father of two sons, and his wife is expecting their third child. We pray that God grants comfort, guidance and relief to his family and the families of the other victims. To Allah we belong, and to Allah we return."
CAIR also condemned anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian extremists who rushed to spread false claims about yesterday's mass shooting in an attempt to inspire more hatred against Muslim and Palestinian American communities.
"We strongly condemn those anti-Muslim bigots and anti-Palestinian racists who gleefully rushed to blame yesterday's shooting on Muslims and Palestinians without any evidence while a Muslim officer of the NYPD was being shot and killed in the line of duty," said CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell. "The hatred that would lead someone to respond to every mass shooting with such racism and bigotry is disturbing and far too common in public discourse."
CAIR-NY's mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR-NY es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
