CAIR-NY Welcomes Naming of Street After Fallen NYPD Officer Didarul Islam
(NEW YORK, NY, 07/17/26) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the announcement that a street will be renamed in honor of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, the Bangladeshi American Muslim police officer who was killed while attempting to protect others during the Midtown Manhattan mass shooting in July 2025.

Officer Islam, a father of three and a member of the NYPD assigned to the 47th Precinct, was working a security detail when he was fatally shot after confronting the gunman. He was widely hailed as a hero for his courage and selfless service. The street in the Bronx will be named “Detective Didarul Islam Way.”
In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“Officer Didarul Islam embodied the highest ideals of public service, courage, and sacrifice. As a Muslim, immigrant, husband, father, and dedicated NYPD officer, he gave his life protecting others without hesitation. We welcome the decision to permanently honor his legacy by naming a street after him so that future generations of New Yorkers will remember his heroism and commitment to serving all members of our city’s diverse communities.”
