CAIR-NY Welcomes Hate Crime Probes into Arson Targeting Jewish-Japanese Restaurant, Shooting Outside Synagogue

(NEW YORK, NY, 12/8/2023) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed hate crime probes into an arson attack targeting a Jewish-Japanese fusion restaurant in Brooklyn and a shooting outside a synagogue in Albany. 

Police are investigating a suspected arson hate crime after a man set fire to the outside of a Jewish-Japanese fusion restaurant in Brooklyn early Saturday morning.

 A man who fired a gun into the air outside a synagogue in Albany has been arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a charge authorities said was related to his admitted use of marijuana. Police say the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

“We condemn these crimes targeting the Jewish community and thank law enforcement authorities for their swift responses,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “No one should be subjected to violence or intimidation on the basis of their ethnicity or religion.” 

She added CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Jewish hatred, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
