(NEW YORK, NY, 10/16/2023) —The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned the hate crime assault on Sunday of a Sikh young man wearing a turban.

The incident took place on an MTA bus Sunday morning, where the alleged suspect approached a young man wearing a turban and allegedly said, "We don't wear that in this country and take that mask off!” The suspect then allegedly punched the victim in his face, back, and in the back of his head. The suspect also allegedly attempted to forcibly remove the victim’s turban from his head. The NYPD Hate Crimes Unit is investigating the incident as a hate crime assault.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:

“We condemn this apparently bias-motivated hate crime assault against the Sikh community. We pray that the victim of this violent assault recovers quickly and heals from this trauma. We also support the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force investigation of the attack, and hope the alleged assailant is apprehended swiftly before harming anyone else.”

She added, “However, once again we are seeing hatred and ignorance spinning their ugly heads just like post 9/11. Incendiary one-sided statements from public officials have consequences and that is evident in what is happening in the streets.”

She said CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Jewish hatred, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
