CAIR-NY Welcomes Hate Crime Indictment for Assault Targeting Jewish Man in Brooklyn

(NEW YORK, NY, 6/3/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed the indictment of a Staten Island man who allegedly attacked a Jewish man as he was walking with his wife to Shabbat services in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood.

The alleged assailant and his five companions reportedly descended upon the couple, who were dressed in traditional Hasidic clothing, then punched the husband and kicked him multiple times, resulting in severe facial and bodily injuries.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said: 

“We are relieved that the alleged perpetrator of this despicable, hateful act has been indicted and applaud the NYPD for treating this assault with the seriousness it deserves. It is shameful enough to attack someone because of their religion or perceived religion, but to do so as they are walking to their house of worship to remember God is absolutely sickening. We look forward to justice being served.” 

She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white supremacy, anti-Jewish hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.
