CAIR-NY Condemns Alleged Anti-Jewish Assault, Urges Hate Crime Probe

(NEW YORK, NY, 12/16/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned an alleged anti-Jewish assault in Central Park and urged the NYPD to investigate the incident as a hate crime.

On Wednesday evening, a 63-year-old man in Central Park was reportedly attacked. The alleged assailant came up from behind him and knocked the older man to the ground, resulting in a chipped tooth and broken hand. Police say the suspect made antisemitic remarks before sneering “Kanye 2024” – who himself has been under fire for his antisemitic remarks.

Afaf Nasher, executive director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:

“Violence is always shocking, and attacks allegedly based on bigotry carry even greater trauma to the individual attacked, the community targeted and the entire city. We hope the victim in this latest assault heals fully, and we urge the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force to investigate the attack as a possible hate crime.”

She said CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Jewish hatred, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
