MEDIA ADVISORY: CAIR-NY to Join CCNY Student Protest Calling for Administration to Provide Interfaith Space

(NEW YORK, NY, 10/10/2022)— On Tuesday, October 11, the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will join City College of New York (CCNY) students as they protest and demand that CCNY provide students with an interfaith space for faith-based activities.

WHAT: Prayer Space Protest to Demand Interfaith Space for CCNY Students

WHEN: Tuesday, October 11, 1:15 p.m. ET

WHERE: Outside Wille Administration Building on the CCNY Campus

CONTACT: CAIR-NY Legal Director Ahmed Mohamed, ahmedmohamed@cair.com646-481-2103

NOTE: Protest will include a Muslim prayer near the end. Additionally, the protest will continue on Wednesday and Thursday at the same time and location.

According to CCNY students, the administration has displaced the interfaith space for several years and despite many attempts to persuade the administration to provide an adequate, appropriate space for interfaith activities, the CCNY administration has failed students and dismissed their requests.

Muslim students are disproportionally impacted by CCNY’s failure to accommodate faith-based students because of Muslim students’ religious requirements to pray five times a day. Since CCNY has failed to provide an appropriate interfaith space, Muslims students have been forced to pray is small, cramped areas, including dirty, narrow hallways.

Individuals can demand CCNY provide an interfaith space by sending an e-mail letter to the administration: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/demand-ccny-city-college-provide-students-with-prayer-space
