CAIR-NY Urges Transparent Investigations for Excessive Force on Brooklyn Subway Trains, Civil Rights Group Calls for NYPD Accountability

(New York, N.Y. 10/28/10) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) called for transparent investigations into NYPD’s apparent excessive force used during two Brooklyn subway trains on Friday and Saturday.  CAIR-NY also called for officers involved in the incidents to be held accountable.

In one incident that took place at the Jay Street subway stop, a police officer is videotaped striking at least 2 teenagers, one has been identified as a 15-year-old.

In a separate incident on Friday, video surfaced of a dozen NYPD officers rushing inside a subway car to arrest a young man.  The man is sitting with his arms raised while police point their guns through the subway window before storming the subway car.

The young man was charged with theft of services for fare hopping at a previous stop.

CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher stated:

“CAIR-NY denounces the NYPD’s aggressive response for simple fare hopping.  The NYPD placed the lives of subway passengers at risk with their actions. As civil rights groups continue to document more and more police abuses, the NYPD continues to exercise excessive force with little accountability and transparency. The NYPD must initiate transparent investigations into each incident and hold accountable all officers involved in abusive actions.“

Ms. Nasher further called into question Governor Cuomo’s plans to add 500 police officers to patrol inside the subways without bodycams.

This past summer, CAIR-NY made similar calls for accountability and transparency into NYPD misconduct.
