(New York, N.Y. 6/22/2020) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemns the Islamophobic Facebook post of Rockaway Community Board 14 member Eddy Pastore and calls for his resignation. Posted Saturday, Pastore’s comments suggests that the candidate for Democratic District Leader Tory Schnupp has alternative motives due to her Middle Eastern origins and family relations.

Pastore’s language exploited, and raised racist concerns over the roots of her husband, and her family more broadly, in the Middle East. Pastore seems to assert that the national origins and religion of Schnupp’s family indicated she had “alternative reasons” for her candidacy. Schnupp responded with claims Pastore spread the “xenophobic, hateful, and inaccurate” information to discredit her campaign.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher stated,

“The fight to weed out hateful actions and rhetoric from our communities is an ongoing struggle, and the language and tropes perpetuated by Community Board Member Eddy Pastore are evidence that we need to stand in continued solidarity against Islamophobic and xenophobic rhetoric. Hateful and incendiary language by a public official represents an inability to serve all equally. In light of Pastore’s corrosive comments, we call for his immediate resignation from Community Board 14.”

CAIR-NY is committed to combating hate wherever it exists in our community.
