(NEW YORK, N.Y., 12/23/2020) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed Governor Andrew Cuomo’s signing of Landmark Automatic Voter Registration law making New York the 19th state to adopt automatic voter registration (AVR).  The bill was signed into law yesterday and will go into effect January 2023.

The AVR bill will streamline and improve registration throughout the state. Once the law takes effect, people who are eligible to vote will be registered automatically, unless they opt out, when they apply for many types of services, including Medicaid, unemployment, and public housing.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Legal Director Ahmed Mohamed said:

“The Automatic Voter Registration law, once implemented, will remove significant barriers to voting for many eligible Muslim New Yorkers. We applaud the Governor, Senator Gianaris, Assembly Member Walker, and the many other legislators and advocates for making this election reform a reality. Our election system is antiquated and needs updating. This is a welcomed step in the right direction.”
