CAIR, CAIR-NY Express Solidarity with Jewish Community After Hanukkah Stabbings

(NEW YORK, NEW YORK 12/29/19)
-- The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its National office today expressed solidarity with the Jewish community in that state and nationwide after five people were stabbed Saturday night at a rabbi's home during a Hanukkah celebration. Saturday’s attack was the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting the New York Jewish community.

“We condemn this latest act of violence targeting a religious minority and express the solidarity of American Muslims with the Jewish community in New York and nationwide,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “The rise in violent anti-Semitic attacks should be of concern to us all. No member of any religious, ethnic or minority community should be made to feel unsafe in the streets or in their own homes, whether in New York or any other American city.”

In a statement, CAIR-NY Litigation Director Ahmed Mohamed said:

“The recent wave of attacks targeting our Jewish neighbors is horrific and unacceptable. All New Yorkers must stand together against the growing anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia, and bigotry we are witnessing in our state and around the country. It is only together that we can push back against hate and instead promote justice and mutual understanding.”

Mohamed encouraged Muslim New Yorkers to reach out to their Jewish neighbors to show solidarity.

To show solidarity, Muslim New Yorkers are asked to attend a solidarity event hosted by Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ). The event is entitled “Light The Darkness: Solidarity on the 8th Night of Chanukah” and will be taking place later today from 5-6 p.m. at Grand Army Plaza, Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11217.
