CAIR, CAIR-NY Condemns Mayor Eric Adams Over New York City’s Passage of Anti-BDS Executive Order
(NEW YORK, N.Y., 12/5/2025) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its New York (CAIR-NY) today condemned Mayor Eric Adams for signing an anti-BDS Executive Order aimed at restricting the city from doing business with entities that support boycotts of Israel.
[NOTE: BDS refers to Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions in support of Palestinian human rights.]

Civil rights advocates have long warned that anti-BDS laws, regardless of one’s personal views on boycotts, risk infringing freedom of expression. Federal courts across the country have repeatedly recognized that boycotts for social justice purposes fall under the First Amendment.
CAIR-NY's Executive Director Afaf Nasher, Esq. Stated:
“New Yorkers have the right to engage in peaceful boycotts as a form of political expression. No city law should condition public contracts or opportunities based on a particular political viewpoint. Free speech rights do not disappear simply because elected officials disagree with the message.
"Mayor Adams has insulted the voters of New York City by attempting to enshrine the type of Israel First policies they just rejected at the ballot box. The people of New York City just made clear that they want principled leaders who focus on serving the people of New York, not corrupt politicians who shred their First Amendment rights for the benefit of a foreign apartheid government. Mr. Adams' executive order, which was signed just after he embraced the genocidal war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, must end with his departure from office."
