CAIR-NY Condemns Racist Flyers Posted Near Coney Island High School, Bronx Anti-Asian Hate Crime

(NEW YORK, N.Y. – 12/14/2021)  The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the posting of racist flyers in and around Abraham Lincoln High School in Coney Island. The civil rights group further condemned the raise of anti-Asian hate crimes after another hate crime occurred on a subway platform in the Bronx.

The NYPD launched a hate crime probe after racist flyers were posted in and around a high school in Coney Island. The racist flyers read: “Lincoln High School black kids are a negative influence on the community. They invade apartment buildings and the police needs (sic) to be called constantly.” The flyers also included racist imagery.

Earlier this week, it was reported that on December 1, a suspect approached a 58-year-old Asian woman and made anti-Asian remark before he slapped her in the face. The bias incident occurred at the subway platform at the 174th Street station in the Bronx.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).

In a statement, CAIR-NY Legal Director Ahmed Mohamed said:

“The racist flyers targeting Black youth at Abraham Lincoln High School are vile, racist, hateful, and disgusting. Such hate must be rejected by all, and the students and the surrounding community must receive the support to feel welcomed.

“We are saddened to see the continued rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. Asian Americans deserve to feel safe on our subways and in their homes and neighborhoods. CAIR-NY condemns anti-Asian hate and continues to stand in solidarity with the AAPI community.”
