(NEW YORK, NY, 6/9/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed hate crime charges for four teenagers who allegedly painted anti-Black and anti-Jewish graffiti on the walls of a Yorktown, New York bridge underpass.

The four young men allegedly scrawled the word “n***er”, drew a swastika, and wrote several hateful phrases that referred to the Holocaust in an attempt to implicate an innocent classmate who was not present at the time and took no part in the incident.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:

“We welcome hate crime charges for this contemptible act and applaud the Yorktown Police Department for its swift response. At the same time, we hope that there will be an educational component to the response against these racist ideologies and hate-filled conspiracy theories that are corrupting the hearts and minds of the young and old."

She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white supremacy, anti-Jewish hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR-NY has condemned several other disturbing hate incidents in recent weeks:

CAIR-NY's mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR-NY es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
