CAIR-NY Internship Program: Learn, Interact, Grow.

CAIR-NY has been offering internships providing a valuable opportunity for practical experience that gives interns the chance to see those who put words into action. An internship at CAIR-NY is a great experience for those who are interested in the fields of civil rights, media relations, political advocacy, and community development.

 

Interns are exposed to many exciting and challenging projects throughout their internship. Interns learn and understand the tools of the trade in each field that is essential to activism. In addition to projects, interns also get the unique opportunity to interact with different organizations in New York City, from reporters in the media, newspapers, law firms, and much more.

 

CAIR-NY has partnered with several universities and law schools establishing a highly competitive for-credit and non-for-credit internship/externship program including:

Civil Rights

Intern will work closely with the Civil Rights Director and staff attorney on resolving cases of discrimination reported to CAIR-NY.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Assist in documenting incidents of religious discrimination by counseling and interviewing complainants regarding their incident
  • Research laws and policies on employment, student conduct, and immigration procedures, as well as criminal offenses and other areas as seen fit
  • Updating databases containing information about abuses reported to CAIR-NY

 

Qualifications:

  • Organized and demonstrate the ability to follow through the various on-going and newly assigned tasks
  • Excellent written communication skills and a commitment to serving the community

Community Affairs

Intern will work closely with the Community Affairs Director on establishing or maintaining relations with New York-based organizations on issues that are of CAIR-NY's scope.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Organize activities for CAIR-NY's "Muslims CARE" program for the summer
  • Assist with other initiatives including the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays
  • Meet with representatives of various organizations in the NY area
  • Maintain appropriate files and databases
  • Publicize CAIR-NY events and post events to appropriate websites and list serves

 

Qualifications:

  • Friendly, outgoing and self-motivated
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and visual skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow through the various on-going and newly assigned tasks Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure

Communications

Intern will work closely with the Community Affairs Director on projects and/or daily tasks per CAIR-NY's organizational needs.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Work on pieces that deconstruct sensational and biased coverage of issues pertinent to Muslims and Islam with a purpose to flag such pieces, highlight their inaccuracies, and to offer thoughtful analyses that diffuse misconceptions
  • Assist with drafting press releases, action alerts and mass emails to membership
  • Maintain CAIR-NY website, Facebook, and Twitter accounts
  • Assist with producing and editing promotional videos and design promotional materials for different events and different audiences

 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient with Windows XP, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Explorer
  • Proficient with internet research Experience with general administrative support a plus
