"We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world." -Howard Zinn

BECAUSE OUR VOICES MATTER

I AM MUSLIM, I AM AMERICAN

American Muslims share similar aspirations and outlooks as their fellow co-patriots. "I am Muslim, I am American" is an effort highlighting community members whose everyday lives are dedicated to building community and strengthening our nation.

CAIR-NY produced a public service announcement (PSA) that began airing late last year in New York City's Times Square featuring an American Muslim NYPD sergeant, as well as a Muslim Little League all-star, a human rights activist, a doctoral candidate, and an attorney.

The PSA was placed on the CBS Super Screen and aired every hour for 18 hours each day until January 16, 2010, on the 26-foot by 20-foot full-motion screen.

Hello. My name is Ali.

"Hello. My name is Ali." seeks to empower the voice of our grassroots. The fan page of Facebook creates a space for American Muslims from across the spectrum to define themselves on their own terms.

Join the fan page on Facebook here and fill in the blank on your own terms: "My name is ____ and I am ____". Fans may also post news links, upload photos and post videos relevant to the theme.

Countert-ERROR-ism Policy: MACLC's Critique of the NYPD's Report on Homegrown Radicalism

CAIR-NY is a co-founder of the Muslim American Civil Liberties Coalition (MACLC), created in 2007 following the release of the New York City Police Department report, “Radicalization in the West: The Homegrown Threat.” MACLC was created for the purpose of articulating a New York-specific Muslim perspective on homeland security, civil liberties, counterterrorism, and law enforcement decision-making.

In 2008, MACLC issued an advocacy paper titled "CountertERRORism Policy: MACLC's Critique of the NYPD's Report on Homegrown Radicalism." Co-authored by CAIR-NY, this paper highlights the 2007 NYPD Report's failure to provide practical counter-terrorism solutions that target real offenders. Instead the NYPD Report puts forth a model of radicalization that if implemented as policy would ultimately lead to racial profiling of mainstream Muslims.

UPDATE

Following ongoing meetings and consultation with MACLC, the NYPD added a "Statement of Clarification" (Clarification) to its 2007 radicalization report. The Clarification stated clearly that the NYPD's 2007 report "should not be read to characterize Muslims as intrinsically dangerous or intrinsically linked to terrorism, and that it cannot be a license for racial, religious, or ethnic profiling." To read the clarification (pp 11-12) in full, click here.

MACLC is continuing to urge the NYPD to publicize the Clarification and engage in deeper dialogue with the group to ensure effective security policy.
