(New York, NY – 1/21/06) On January 10, 2006, New York’s elementary school students began statewide testing. The testing prevented many families from being together on Eid-al-Adha (Celebration of Sacrifice). Many parents and city officials have criticized the state education department for beginning testing on such an important Islamic holiday.
In a letter to the education department chancellor, Omar Mohammedi, NYC Human Rights Commissioner, stated, “Mandating these children to take State testing during this important holiday is at a minimum insensitive if not discriminatory.”
CAIR-NY is working with other coalition partners to address the concerns of the community regarding this issue and other religious accommodation issues with the New York State Department of Education. If your child was tested on Eid ul-Adha and/or Eid ul-Fitr and you would like to file a complaint please complete the form attached and contact us immediately.
