CAIR-NY Accomplishments

• Developing a Community Leadership Forum with accompanying community leadership development lessons on CD-ROM.
• Developing a lecture series entitled “Lectures on Human Rights and Social Justice, “ and educational forum that features speakers on topics ranging from crises confronting our community in today’s political environment to rememberances of our Muslim past.
• Membership in major relevant coalitions (New York Immigration Coalition, 9/11 Coalition for Constitutional and Human Rights, James Yee Ad hoc committee, Muslim Consultative Network, New York Disaster Interfaith Services, New York City bill of Rights Defense Campaign)
• Providing free legal advice and case management to over 200 clients annually
• Created the Emergency Family Fund which provides assistance to more than sixty families who found themselves in a financial crisis following the mas detention and deportation of their fathers and husbands.
• Created a Media relations fellowship provides young people with the necessary skills needed to represent the Muslim community in print and broadcast media.
• Voter registration efforts yielded over 1,000 newly registered voters.
• Action Alert and emergency meetings regarding Congressman Peter King’s anti-Muslim remarks.
• Forum on 9/11 detainees, in association with the Islamic Center of New York University Alumni Association.
• Petitions on campaign finance reform, compliance with United Nations’ resolutions, and against the ban on hijab (headscarves) in certain United States governmental procedures (such as Driver’s license photos) and abroad in France.
• Ramadan (Muslim holy month) food drive and clothing distribution.
• Initiated meetings with FBI Directors regarding national security concerns and civil rights issues
• Hosted US. State Department delegations annually for “US Department of State Reporting Tour on religious Freedom and Pluralism.”
• INS Registration Clinics and Calls. CAIR-NY organized several information sessions for Muslims affected by INS special registration, a program in which foreign nationals from Muslim countries were forced to register with the government. CAIR-NY set up a telephone hotline which was advertised in ethnic press and television for people to call with questions about Special Registration and provided Urdu translators at legal clinics.
