CAIR-NY Condemns Racist Taunts by White Students Targeting Black Athletes, Calls on Rockland County to Take Action

(NEW YORK, NY, 5/20/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned racist verbal abuse by white Pearl River High School students targeting at Black Nyack High School athletes during a track meet between the two schools. 

One Pearl River student allegedly shouted “n***er” at a Black student athlete during the event.

This is apparently the second time that a Pearl River Student has directed racist taunts at Black student athletes.

CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said in a statement: 

“Racism has no place in our schools and students of color are entitled to a safe and hostile-free school environment. We condemn the racist taunts that Black student athletes continue to face in Rockland County. The county has an obligation to take corrective steps to prevent this ongoing hostility. Rockland County needs to work with local Black leadership to ensure a safe learning and athletic environment for students of color.” 

She said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.
